The Tradition of the Yule Log

Burning a yule log is a tradition celebrated in many countries around Christmastime. Since fire serves as a source of warmth and light during the cold darkness of winter, a special large log is burned to symbolize rebirth in the new year, and to remind us of the heavenly light that shone at Christ's birth.

The Legend of the Pickle

The Legend of the Pickle

Long ago in Germany, the famous pickle legend came to be, a fun game for the entire family.
No one knows who, what or why, but it''s a Christmas tradition to be enjoyed, even by the most shy.
Hidden in the branches of every Christmas tree, children of all ages hunt for the pickle in green.
The younger the child the bigger the pickle is, as we grow, the pickle size gets smaller and presents big challenges.
Hunt for it, search for it, but your hands must be behind, and do not touch the tree, or you''ll lose the prize in mind.

News Flash - One Lucky Tortoise!

LONDON, England (CNN) -- No one knows where he started his slow, lonely journey, but it ended this week when a quick-thinking driver scooped him up and rescued him from a busy motorway south of London.

John Formby holds Freeway the tortoise Saturday, September 19 in Worthing, England. John Formby holds Freeway the tortoise Saturday, September 19 in Worthing, England.

Freeway the tortoise, as he has since come to be known, is now living comfortably at an animal rescue center in Worthing, along England's south coast, while staff try to find his owner. Whoever owned Freeway fitted him with a microchip, but unfortunately the chip is blank, with no information about where he came from, said Billy Elliott, an animal rescue officer at Worthing and District Animal Rescue Service.

The microchip is a type usually used in America, but it is made in Belgium, so it's likely the reptile came from one of the two countries, Elliott said."They feel he was definitely from abroad, but we still don't know," Elliott told CNN. "It's still up in the air where he came from."

It was Worthing resident John Formby who spotted the tortoise Wednesday as it crawled across five lanes of traffic on the M25, a major motorway that circles London. At the junction with the M23, a motorway that goes south toward Worthing, Formby said he spotted what he thought was a rock or piece of debris on the road. "As I get closer to it, it's moving," Formby told CNN. "As I get closer, I recognize it as a tortoise." Formby said he pulled over onto the hard shoulder of the road and went back to grab the animal." As I'm running back, there's a few cars coming up," he said. "About seven or eight cars had gone past it, but two cars had actually gone straight over the top of it. A white van drove over the top of it."
The tortoise had by that point made it from the middle lane to the slow lane, so Formby said he "jumped out (and) grabbed it." The animal didn't seem upset, he said -- "it seemed very determined just to get where it was going." Formby put the tortoise in his car, fed it, and took it home to Worthing, where he brought it to a vet to see whether it had been microchipped. The vet found the chip, but it had no information on it.
"The microchip is an extremely useful system in helping reunite lost pets and their owners, but the microchip is only as good as the information on the database," Elliott said. He said they hope the chip manufacturer may at least be able to trace it to the veterinarian who inserted the chip. Freeway is a Hermann's tortoise, a type of small to medium tortoise originally from southern Europe, according to the California Turtle and Tortoise Club. Freeway himself is no bigger than a dessert bowl, Formby said -- about eight inches across and only three or four inches high. Elliott estimates he's about 10 years old. "He's very friendly," he said. "He's obviously a much loved pet." The animal rescue service will keep Freeway for the weekend before placing him in a foster home, Elliott said. If the owner can't be traced within 28 days, they will then try to find a new owner.

Freeway's past and future may be a mystery, but one thing is for sure, Elliott said.
"He's one lucky tortoise."

Cookie Cutter Christmas Tree!

Elaine of Ohio, decorates one of her many Christmas trees each year with cookie cutters and cookie style Christmas ornaments!

What a great use of that collection of cookie cutters. I LOVE cookie cutters and try to pick up one whenever we're away on vacation, trips, etc. They make great gifts too!

Tie bright ribbons on the cutters to hang on the tree and load it down with cookie style Christmas ornaments. This would be a great time to make the salt dough cookies with children. Perfect for a table top tree in the kitchen or dining room.

Ornament Dough

3 cups all-purpose (plain) flour
3/4 cup salt
3/4 teaspoon powdered alum
1 1/4 cups water

In large mixing bowl, combine flour, salt and alum. mix well. Add water.Mix well and shape dough into ball. Knead dough on lightly floured surface for about 5 min or until smooth. If dough is too stiff, sprinkle with water; if too moist, add flour. Work with small portions at a time. Store excess dough in airtight container.

Roll dough on lightly floured surface to about 1/4" thickness. Dip edges of cutters into vegetable oil and cut into desired shapes. Use a drinking straw to make a hole about 1/4 from the top edge of the cutouts for hanging. Yields about 40 2 1/2" to 3" ornaments or 24 3 1/2" to 4" ornaments. To connect pieces of dough, moisten with a water dipped paintbrush.

Spray a 10" pie plate with vegetable cooking spray. Place ornaments in prepared pan. Microwave at 30% or medium low for about 5-10 min or until the tops feel dry, rotating plate and checking ornament every 2 min. (Sometimes I place an identical size pie plate on top of the cookies to help keep them flat during baking.)

Remove ornament to cooling rack, set aside for 24 hrs to complete drying. Paint with water colors or acrylic paints.Glitter paints in tubes work well. You can also coat your ornaments with a coat of clear spray paint once you're done decorating to give more shine.

Aromatic Dough Ornaments

2 3/4 cups all-purpose (plain) flour
3/4 cup salt
1/4 cup ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon ground allspice
1 tablespoon ground cloves
3/4 teaspoon powdered alum
                                                      1 1/4 cup water

Mix same as plain dough recipe. This recipe has a brownish color similar to gingerbread. Decorate with cinnamon sticks, hard candies or even royal frosting. Great for gingerbread cookie ornaments.

maraschino cherries (noses)
licorice or fruit leather (whiskers and tails)

Slice cherries to use for "nose". Roll out fruit leather or licorice and slice into thin strips for whiskers. Add thin slices of almond nut for ears.

Halloween Party Idea - Pumpkin Painting!

Pumpkin painting is a perfect activity for kids all ages at your Halloween party. We started out with larger pumpkins, but over the last few years have learned that the smaller, "pie" pumpkins are just right! Kids can handle them easier and they're less expensive. Pick out pumpkins with stems attached, the longer the better and especially any with interesting crooks and turns. Handle the pumpkins by holding them from the bottom, NOT by the stem. In this photo, the pumpkins have been piled in an old wheelbarrow covered with burlap sacks. Sometimes we use a Radio Flyer wagon filled with hay.....

Use washable poster style paints, and keep a roll of paper towels, moist wipes and small jars of clean water to wash the brushes in. Provide an assortment of brushes from fine to broad. Colored markers work well for smaller details and by far are less messy, but you still need the jars of paint for bold strokes.

We usually set up the "pumpkin painting area" somewhat off site from the back porch, so that the kids can be loud and have fun while painting. Its the first activity they do on arrival since the party lasts until after dark. Usually an adult is assigned to steering kids over to pick out a pumpkin as soon as they arrive. This way they can paint their pumpkin, set it aside and it has plenty of time to dry before leaving the party.

Provide a flat, level surface to paint on. A picnic or folding table, or even an overturned watering trough covered with an inexpensive plastic tablecloth.

Have fun and watch the creativity begin to flow!
